Capsules, pods or ground: where is the caffeine?
Short answer, in the cup: a capsule espresso gives about 55–65 mg of caffeine, a soft pod 60–95 mg, and a mug of filter coffee made from grounds 80–120 mg. Short answer, per 100 ml: it’s the reverse. France’s food-safety agency, ANSES, measured all three preparation modes and found 150 mg per 100 ml in a capsule espresso against 75 mg for a soft pod and 50 mg for filter coffee.
Both answers are true, and that’s the whole subject: the capsule is by far the most concentrated, and often the lightest in total, because you drink 40 ml of it instead of 240.
Two questions people constantly conflate
“Where is the caffeine?” means two different things, and most comparisons blur them:
- Concentration — how much caffeine sits in 100 ml of liquid. It’s what gives the impression of strength and the hit of the first sip.
- Dose — how much caffeine you actually swallowed once the cup is empty. It’s what counts for your day and for your night.
An espresso is a small, very concentrated volume. Filter coffee is a large, weakly concentrated one. Depending on which question you asked, the winner isn’t the same.
What ANSES measured
In 2013, ANSES analysed the coffee produced by the preparation formats that had just taken over European kitchens — soft pods and capsules — to compare them against traditional filter coffee. The average concentrations it recorded:

The agency’s conclusion is unambiguous: coffee from these newer formats is more concentrated in caffeine than filter coffee, and the capsule more so than the pod. (The rest of its positions on caffeine is summarised in what ANSES says about caffeine.)
Two figures validate that measurement from the outside. Nespresso quotes 55–65 mg for an Espresso capsule served at 40 ml — at 150 mg per 100 ml, that lands exactly on it. Senseo quotes 70–90 mg per 100 ml for its darker roasts, close to the 75 mg measured. Three independent sources agreeing is rare; it’s worth leaning on.
And in the cup?
Just multiply by what you actually drink. This is where the ranking flips:

The most concentrated format lands at the bottom of the milligram ranking; the least concentrated, at the top. Nothing strange about it: the mug holds six times the liquid of the espresso, and the concentration ratio is only three to one.
Why is the capsule so concentrated?
Because it pushes a small amount of water, under pressure, through a very fine and tightly tamped puck. The contact is brief but violent, and extraction is highly efficient for the volume produced. The breakdown by range — Original, Vertuo, decaf — is in how much caffeine is in a Nespresso capsule.
It’s the same mechanism that makes an espresso taste stronger than filter coffee while often holding less caffeine in total. Concentration and dose don’t move in the same direction.
The soft pod: 7 g, and the volume decides
A soft pod holds roughly 7 g of loosely packed ground coffee, sealed between two sheets of paper. That’s a real dose of coffee — comparable to what you’d put in a filter for one cup — but the water passes through without pressure, like a miniature drip brewer.
Hence its middle position: more coffee than a capsule espresso, less concentration, and a final volume around 120 ml. If your machine offers two cup sizes, the “large cup” button barely changes the caffeine: it’s the same pod, just more diluted. You drink more liquid, not more caffeine.
Ground coffee: the only format you dose yourself
This is the real difference, and it usually goes unnoticed. With a capsule or a pod, the amount of coffee is fixed at the factory — you can’t change it. With grounds, you’re the one filling the scoop.
Between 6 g and 10 g per cup there’s nearly double the caffeine, for a cup that looks identical. It’s the only genuinely gradual lever you have: a slightly less heaped spoon in the morning does more than switching brands. Which one to pick if you want less caffeine?
Neither, really: the format isn’t the right lever. What decides is the amount of coffee used and the volume you drink. Three moves that actually work, in order of effect:
- Cut the dose if you’re on grounds — the only format where that’s possible.
- Pick the smaller format: a capsule espresso rather than a lungo, a small cup rather than a mug.
- Switch the late cups to decaf, in any format — a decaf pod drops below 3 mg per 100 ml.
What doesn’t work: changing machines and hoping the new format is “lighter.” It reliably isn’t.
What to take away
The ranking depends on the question. Per 100 ml, the capsule crushes everything — three times filter coffee. In the cup, the order nearly reverses: a large mug of filter outweighs a capsule espresso, simply because it’s six times bigger.
