How much caffeine from a bean-to-cup machine?
An espresso from a bean-to-cup machine holds roughly 70 to 90 mg of caffeine, against 55 to 65 mg for a capsule espresso. The gap isn’t in the technology: it’s in the amount of ground coffee.
A bean-to-cup machine grinds 7 to 9 g per espresso, where a capsule holds 5 to 6. More material going in, more caffeine coming out.

The intensity button is a real caffeine control
Here’s the difference that counts, and it’s almost always missed.
On a box of capsules, the intensity number describes taste — body, bitterness, roast — and says nothing about dose. A capsule rated 10 can hold less caffeine than one rated 4 (the detail is here).
On a bean-to-cup machine it’s the reverse. The intensity, aroma or strength setting commands the grinder: it raises or lowers the grams of coffee sent into the brew chamber. Going up a notch genuinely means more coffee — so more caffeine.
It’s the only home format where that lever exists. With a capsule or a pod the amount is fixed at the factory, and nothing on the machine can change it.
Why a long coffee climbs so high
On most machines, choosing a larger size doesn’t just add water: the machine also raises the dose of grounds, often to 10 or 11 g, so the cup doesn’t come out thin.
Hence the 90 to 120 mg of a long coffee against the 70 to 90 of an espresso on the same machine. That’s a different gesture from pressing “lungo” on an espresso capsule, which adds only 5 to 15 mg because the grounds don’t move — the full comparison is here.
Three things that still shift the figure
At an identical dose, variation remains:
- The bean. A robusta-heavy blend carries nearly twice the caffeine of pure arabica. It’s the heaviest factor after the dose.
- Grind fineness. Finer means more complete extraction; coarser, less. The effect is real but modest next to the weight of grounds.
- How well the machine is set. A grinder drifting out of calibration or a clogged doser deliver less than the setting claims.

How to adjust it, in either direction
This is the format’s concrete advantage, and it takes two seconds:
- To go down: drop the dose or intensity setting by one or two notches. On many machines that’s 1 to 2 g less, so 10 to 20 mg per cup.
- To go down further: keep the setting and pick the shorter size. An espresso rather than a long coffee saves 20 to 40 mg.
- To go up: the reverse, or the double, which genuinely doubles the dose because it doubles the grounds.
- To remove it without changing habits: a hopper of decaf beans, or the decaf whole bean most roasters now sell.
None of that requires a different machine or a different brand. It’s what makes the bean format unusually easy to steer when you’re trying to adjust your intake.
Why two identical machines don’t make the same coffee
This causes regular confusion when comparing notes with a colleague or a neighbour. Two units of the same model can serve cups 30 to 40% apart in caffeine, with neither one faulty.
Three reasons stack up: the dose setting differs from one household to the next, the bean differs far more, and the grind fineness was adjusted separately. Add burr wear and how consistently the machine is cleaned, and the gap becomes real.
So there’s no such thing as “the machine’s value”. There’s the value of your machine as you’ve set it — which is exactly what the dose control is telling you.
How many cups in a day?
The general reference point for a healthy adult is about 400 mg a day and 200 mg in a single sitting. On a bean-to-cup machine:
- Four to five espressos reach 400 mg.
- Three to four long coffees get there too.
- Two doubles are already close, and a single double brushes the 200 mg single-sitting mark.

What to take away
Your bean-to-cup machine makes a heavier coffee than a capsule for one reason: it puts more coffee in. Seven to nine grams against five or six, and up to eleven on a large size.
