More of that enzyme means caffeine gets cleared faster. A smoker’s caffeine half-life is shorter, which is one reason many smokers can drink a lot of coffee, late, without much trouble — and often do.
What happens when you quit
Stop smoking and CYP1A2 activity falls back toward normal over about a week. Nothing about your coffee changes — but your body now clears it at the slower, non-smoker rate. Keep the same intake and the caffeine in your blood can roughly double, because it’s hanging around far longer than it used to.
That’s enough to tip a comfortable habit into jitteriness, anxiety, a racing heart, and trouble sleeping — the classic signs of too much caffeine, arriving without you changing a thing.
The symptoms get blamed on the wrong thing
Here’s why this matters. Someone who’s just quit expects to feel edgy and sleep badly, and chalks it all up to nicotine. But a real share of it can be caffeine piling up in a body that no longer burns through it quickly. Mistaking caffeine overload for nicotine cravings can make quitting feel harder — and more miserable — than it needs to. The timing compounds the confusion: the caffeine build-up peaks over the same first week as the toughest cravings, so the two stack up together and get lumped into one.

It’s the smoke, not the nicotine
A useful detail: because the CYP1A2 boost comes from combustion products, not nicotine, switching to vaping or nicotine gum or patches doesn’t rev up caffeine clearance the same way. So the “coffee got stronger” effect is tied to stopping smoke, not stopping nicotine. Some medications also affect CYP1A2, which is why any big change in what you take is worth keeping in mind alongside your coffee.
What else speeds up caffeine clearance?
Smoking is the biggest everyday example, but it isn’t the only one. Because the effect comes from the same class of combustion compounds, smoking cannabis induces CYP1A2 in much the same way — so the quitting-and-caffeine interaction applies there too. Charbroiled or grilled foods contain related compounds and can nudge caffeine clearance up a little, though far less than smoking. Going the other way, some medications and hormonal factors slow CYP1A2 down. None of these are as dramatic as stopping smoking, but they’re worth keeping in mind if your coffee suddenly feels different.
